GM Boosts Faulty Ignition Switch Recall to 1.6 Million Cars

DETROIT -- General Motors on Tuesday doubled to 1.6 million the number of small cars it is recalling to fix faulty ignition switches linked to multiple fatal crashes. Just two weeks ago, GM (GM) announced the recall of more than 780,000 Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiac G5s. It's now adding 842,000 Saturn Ion compacts, Chevrolet HHR SUVs and Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky sports cars. The company was immediately lambasted by a well-known safety advocate who says GM knew of the problem for years and waited too long to recall the cars even though people were killed because of the problem. GM says a heavy key ring or jarring from rough roads can cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position and shut off the engine and electrical power. That can knock out power-assisted brakes and steering and disable the front air bags. The problem has been linked to 31 crashes and 13 front-seat deaths. In the fatalities, the air bags didn't inflate, but the engines didn't shut off in all cases, GM said. It was unclear whether the ignition switches caused the crashes, or whether people died because the air bags didn't inflate. The vehicles being recalled include: Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiac G5s from the 2005 through 2007 model years. Saturn Ion compacts from 2003 through 2007. Chevrolet HHR SUVs from 2006 and 2007. Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky sports cars from 2006 and 2007. Most of the cars were sold in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. According to a chronology of events that GM filed Monday with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company knew of the problem as early as 2004, and was told of at least one fatal crash in March of 2007. GM issued service bulletins in 2005 and 2006 telling dealers how to fix the problem with a key insert, and advising them to tell customers not to dangle too many items from their key chains. But the company's records showed that only 474 vehicle owners got the key inserts. GM thought the service bulletin was sufficient because the car's steering and brakes were operable even after the engines lost power, according to the chronology. By the end of 2007, GM knew of 10 cases in which Cobalts were in front-end crashes where the air bags didn't inflate, the chronology said. In 2005, GM initially approved an engineer's plan to redesign the ignition switch, but the change was "later canceled," according to the chronology. "They knew by 2007 they had 10 incidents where the air bag didn't deploy in this type of crash," said Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the consumer advocacy group Center for Auto Safety. "This is a case where both GM and NHTSA should be held accountable for doing a recall no later than the spring of 2007." GM North American President Alan Batey said in a statement that the process to examine the problem "was not as robust" as it should have been and said the GM of today would behave differently. "We will take an unflinching look at what happened and apply lessons learned here to improve going forward," he said. GM spokesman Alan Adler said that initially the rate of problems per 1,000 vehicles was low, so the company didn't recall the cars. NHTSA issued a statement that didn't address why the recall wasn't done sooner. The statement said the agency is communicating with GM about how long it took to identify the safety problem, but didn't specify if any action would be taken. Dealers will replace the ignition switch for free, but Adler said it will take some time for the parts to be manufactured and sent to dealers. No time frame was given for making the repairs. "We are deeply sorry and we are working to address this issue as quickly as we can," Batey said. -.

A recent Interest.com study looked at the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the United States to see which median-income households in those respective areas can afford to purchase a new car, the average price of which was $30,550 in 2012, according to TrueCar. The study found that in only one city can residents actually afford a car with this sticker price -- Washington, D.C. Households with an average income in Washington, D.C. can afford a payment of up to $628, which would allow for purchase of a $31,940 vehicle. The next closest city, San Francisco, can only afford $537 per month, equating to a $26,786. While it's not news that Americans like to buy things that they can't afford, the data is a little surprising given how many great cars there are out there for well under $30,000. Solid hybrids, CUVs, sedans and sports cars can all be had for less than this.

Flowserve: Flow Control on a Roll

Yesterday, shares of this leading provider of flow control products and services rose considerably, and MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, thinks the answer as to why, can be found in the fourth quarter trends.

So, why did shares of Flowserve (FLS) soar 5.7%, yesterday?

Sure, the maker of all things that move water and other fluids beat Wall Street earnings projections for the fourth quarter by 6 cents a share (after excluding one-time charges) and revenue climbed 4.6% year over year, matching analyst estimates.

But the company did issue guidance for 2014 that was, at $3.65 to $4.00 a share, only slightly ahead of the Wall Street consensus of $3.94. Revenue for 2014 will grow, the company projects, by just 2% to 6% to $5.10 to $5.25 billion. That barely hits the current $5.25 billion consensus.

I think the answer for the stock's jump is in the fourth quarter order trends. (Flowserve is a member of my Jubak's Picks portfolio.)

In the fourth quarter, bookings climbed to $1.25 billion, an increase of 15.7%. Bookings for original equipment climbed by 21.6% to $722 million, and aftermarket orders hit a record $531 million, or an 8.5% increase.

That's a big step up in growth at the end of the year, in comparison to the full 2013 year. For all of 2013, orders climbed 3.6%. Original equipment bookings grew by 3.9% and aftermarket orders rose by 3.0%.

In a US stock market trading near record highs, and hungry for growth stories, the promise of acceleration in those fourth quarter orders figures was more than enough, yesterday.

I'm sure it didn't hurt either that the company raised its dividend by 14.3%.

As of February 19, I'm raising my target price on Flowserve to $88 a share by September 2014, from the current target of $84 a share.

    Overall, the most popular emerging market ETFs experienced much sharper declines than the less-than-1% drop the Dow posted this week. Vanguard Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: VWO  ) and iShares Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: EEM  ) were both down just under 3% for the week. But when you drill down to look for particular culprits in the emerging markets, you don't have to look very far to find that it was generally a broad-based decline:

    In China, more concerns about a slowdown in the manufacturing industry put pressure on stocks. The Shanghai index didn't move much, but one key ETF tracking the Chinese market sank nearly 4% in response to the news, largely on weakness in telecom giant China Mobile (NYSE: CHL  ) , which plays a commanding role in many emerging market-focused ETFs.

    � Stocks in Mexico suffered declines of almost 5%, retracing some ground after an extraordinarily strong stretch of gains on optimism about the country's ability to reinvigorate its economy beyond its core reliance on petroleum and to resolve ongoing conflicts with drug cartels.

It divides its operations into four geographical divisions: Brazil; the Caribbean division, consisting of Aruba, Curacao, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands of St. Croix and St. Thomas; North Latin America division (NOLAD), consisting of Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama, and South Latin America division (SLAD), consisting of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. As of December 31, 2010, 35.1% of its restaurants were located in Brazil, 29.7% in SLAD, 27.1% in NOLAD and 8.1% in the Caribbean division. The Company conducts its business through its indirect, wholly owned subsidiary Arcos Dorados B.V.

Company-Operated and Franchised Restaurants

The Company operates its McDonald��-branded restaurants under two basic structures: Company-operated restaurants operated by the Company and franchised restaurants operated by franchisees. Under both operating alternatives the real estate location may ! either be owned or leased by the Company. It owns, fully manages and operates the Company-operated restaurants and retains any operating profits generated by such restaurants, after paying operating expenses and the franchise and other fees owed to McDonald�� under the Master Franchise Agreements (MFAs). In Company-operated restaurants, it assumes the capital expenditures for the building and equipment of the restaurant and, if it owns the real estate location, for the land as well. Under its franchise arrangements, franchisees provide a portion of the capital required by initially investing in the equipment, signs, seating and decor of their restaurants, and by reinvesting in the business over time. It is required by the MFAs to own the real estate or to secure long-term leases for franchised restaurant sites. It subsequently leases or subleases the property to franchisees.

In exchange for the lease and services, franchisees pay a monthly rent to the Company, based on the greater of a fixed rent or a certain percentage of gross sales. In addition to this monthly rent, it collects the monthly continuing franchise fee, which generally is 5% of the United States dollar equivalent of the restaurant�� gross sales, and pays these fees to McDonald�� pursuant to the MFAs. However, if a franchisee fails to pay its monthly continuing franchise fee, it remains liable for payment in full of these fees to McDonald��. As of December 31, 2010, it was engaged in several joint ventures, which collectively owned 24 restaurants, in Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

Restaurant Categories

The Company classifies its restaurants into one of four categories: freestanding, food court, in-store and mall stores. Freestanding restaurants are the type of restaurant, which have ample indoor seating and include a drive-through area. Food court restaurants are located in malls and consist of a front counter and kitchen and do not have their own seating area. In-store restaurants are part ! of a larg! er building and resemble freestanding restaurants, except for the lack of a drive-through area. Mall stores are located in malls like food court restaurants, but have their own seating areas. As of December 31, 2010, 808 (or 46.2%) of its restaurants were freestanding, 359 (or 20.5%) were food court, 265 (or 15.1%) were in-stores and 319 (or 18.2%) were mall stores. In addition, it has four non-traditional stores, such as food carts.

Reimaging

As of December 31, 2010, the Company had completed the reimaging of 308 of 1,569 restaurants. Many of the reimaging projects include the addition of McCafe locations to the restaurant. It has developed system-wide guidelines for the interior and exterior design of reimaged restaurants.

McCafe Locations and Dessert Centers

McCafe locations are stylish, separate areas within restaurants where customers can purchase a range of customizable beverages, including lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, hot and iced premium coffees and hot chocolate. As of December 31, 2010, there were 267 McCafe locations in the Territories, of which 12% were operated by franchisees. Argentina, with 71 locations, has McCafe locations, followed by Brazil, with 67 locations. In addition to McCafe locations, it has Dessert Centers. Dessert Centers operate from existing restaurants, but depend on them for supplies and operational support. As of December 31, 2010, there were 1,306 Dessert Centers in the Territories.

Product Offerings

The Company�� menus feature three tiers of products: affordable entry-level options, such as its Big Pleasures, Small Prices or Combo del Dia (Daily Extra Value Meal) offerings, core menu options, such as the Big Mac, Happy Meal and Quarter Pounder, and premium options, such as Big Tasty or Angus premium hamburgers and chicken sandwiches and low-calorie or low-sodium products, which are marketed through common platforms rather than as individual items. Shares of FRGI are now starting to move within range of triggering another key breakout trade. That trade will hit if FRGI manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $35.73 with high volume.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in FRGI as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $34.23 or above $33 and then once it sustains a move or close above $35.75 with volume that hits near or above 220,525 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then FRGI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its all-time high at $38.84. Any high-volume move above that level will then give FRGI a chance to trend north of $40.

    Alamy Activist investor Barington Capital Group said Monday it was disappointed with a recent plan by Darden Restaurants (DRI) to spin off its Red Lobster chain to enhance shareholder value. Barington, which leads a shareholders' group that owns a stake of more than 2 percent in the chain, said in a statement it views Darden's plan "as incomplete and inadequate." "Darden's board of directors and management team are focused on creating value for all Darden shareholders," a spokesman said in a statement. "We are confident that our plan, together with actions we are taking to enhance guest experiences and reinvigorate demand, will lead to improved performance in our restaurants and substantially increase value for all Darden shareholders." New York-based Barington, which has previously urged Darden management to break up the company and explore spinning off its real estate properties, said it was particularly disappointed that Darden's plan failed to unlock value from the company's real estate holdings. Barington estimates that Darden's real estate could be worth $4 billion. Barington has recommended Darden explore creating a publicly traded real estate investment trust to get full value for the real estate assets. Barington also said it believes that just separating Red Lobster from the rest of Darden will still leave the company with too many brands. "Unfortunately, Darden's proposed plan appears to us to be more of an attempt to do the minimum necessary to maintain the status quo than an effort to formulate a truly comprehensive strategy to improve long-term shareholder value," the fund said its statement. Darden Restaurants (DRI) said Drew Madsen, 57, will be succeeded by the president of its specialty restaurant group, Gene Lee. The appointment is effective immediately. The company's specialty restaurant group, which includes chains such as The Capital Grille and Bahama Breeze, has performed better than the company's flagship chains. At Olive Garden, the company's biggest chain, sales fell 4 percent at restaurants open at least a year in the latest quarter. The figure fell 5.2 percent at Red Lobster. The declines came despite the company's ongoing efforts to revitalize menus and advertising to better reflect changing eating habits. In the specialty restaurant group, sales edged up 0.5 percent at restaurants open at least a year. The metric is a key gauge because it strips out the impact of newly opened and closed locations. To cut spending by about $50 million a year, the company is also reducing its workforce by between 80 to 85 positions, as well as making program cuts. A representative said the personnel cuts won't be at the restaurant level. For the three months ended Aug. 25, the company said it earned $70.2 million, or 53 cents a share. That's compared with $110.8 million, or 85 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Analysts expected a profit of 70 cents a share. Sales rose to $2.16 billion, helped by the opening of new locations. That was short of the $2.19 billion Wall Street expected, according to FactSet. Darden, based in Orlando, Fla., said Madsen will work with Lee and Darden's other executives on the transition until he retires. With all of the targeted wage pressures around fast food workers, with all the health pushback, and with fierce competition, you might just assume that Burger King would be selling off with the broad market. Still, shares hit a new all-time post-IPO high of $24.57 and closed up 1.5% at $24.34 on Friday. The stock price is even more than $1 over the consensus analyst price target. Restaurant Categories

The Company classifies its restaurants into one of four categories: freestanding, food court, in-store and mall stores. Freestanding restaurants are the type of restaurant, which have ample indoor seating and include a drive-through area. Food court restaurants are located in malls and consist of a front counter and kitchen and do not have their own seating area. In-store restaurants are! pa! rt o! f a l! arger building and resemble freestanding restaurants, except for the lack of a drive-through area. Mall stores are located in malls like food court restaurants, but have their own seating areas. As of December 31, 2010, 808 (or 46.2%) of its restaurants were freestanding, 359 (or 20.5%) were food court, 265 (or 15.1%) were in-stores and 319 (or 18.2%) were mall stores. In addition, it has four non-traditional stores, such as food carts.

Reimaging

As of December 31, 2010, the Company had completed the reimaging of 308 of 1,569 restaurants. Many of the reimaging projects include the addition of McCafe locations to the restaurant. It has developed system-wide guidelines for the interior and exterior design of reimaged restaurants.

McCafe Locations and Dessert Centers

McCafe locations are stylish, separate areas within restaurants where customers can purchase a range of customizable beverages, including lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, hot and iced premium coffees and hot chocolate. As of December 31, 2010, there were 267 McCafe locations in the Territories, of which 12% were operated by franchisees. Argentina, with 71 locations, has McCafe locations, followed by Brazil, with 67 locations. In addition to McCafe locations, it has Dessert Centers. Dessert Centers operate from existing restaurants, but depend on them for supplies and operational support. As of December 31, 2010, there were 1,306 Dessert Centers in the Territories.

Product Offerings

The Company�� menus feature three tiers of products: affordable entry-level options, such as its Big Pleasures, Small Prices or Combo del Dia (Daily Extra Value Meal) offerings, core menu options, such as the Big Mac, Happy Meal and Quarter Pounder, and premium options, such as Big Tasty or Angus premium hamburgers and chicken sandwiches and low-calorie or low-sodium products, which are marketed through common platforms rather t han as individual items. Experts: Stocks will go up, but not by much

Experts surveyed by CNNMoney expect the S&P 500 to finish 2014 at 1,960, up 6% for the year.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) After sprinting in 2013, the bulls are looking a little tired this year.

Most experts believe the bull market in stocks will continue for a sixth year in 2014, but they expect the gains to be more modest. According to 30 investment strategists and money managers surveyed by CNNMoney, the S&P 500 should finish 2014 at 1,960, up 6% for the year. While that's a healthy gain, it's a far cry from 2013's 30% increase.

Then again, few expected stocks would rise as much as they did in 2013. CNNMoney's survey of experts a year ago predicted a 5% rise in stocks for 2013. Even the most bullish forecast for a 27% run-up slightly missed the mark.

For the most part, experts are worried that slow economic growth, especially in emerging markets, will put some pressure on stocks this year. Joe Tatusko, chief investment officer at Westport Resources, said he's particularly concerned about China

A slowing global economy could weigh on U.S. corporate profit growth. Without strong earnings, investors may not be willing to pay as much for stocks, especially since the market is already trading at a premium, said Kim Forrest, senior equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital.

By the end of 2013, stocks were valued at more than 15 times earnings estimates for 2014 -- higher than both the 5-year and 10-year average.

Tech, financial stocks could stand out: Through the broader market is looking a little frothy, experts are more bullish on stocks in the technology and financial sectors, as both boast attractive valuations.

Plus, experts believe tech companies could benefit as companies spend more on technology upgrades to increase productivity.

And even though financial stocks had a great run in 2013, experts think they'll continue to outperform as interest rates rise ... which should boost banks' profitability.

Individual investors are the wild card: Brian McMillan, Chief Investment Officer at Commonwealth Financial Network, said he does not believe stocks should go much higher based on their fundamentals. But that may not matter if individual investors continue to flock back t! o stocks.

After shunning stocks after the financial crisis of 2008 and early 2009, individual investors began tiptoeing back into the stock market in 2013.

They poured more than $19 billion into U.S. stock market mutual funds last year, while yanking nearly $80 billion out of bond mutual funds, according to Investment Company Institute Data.

While this is a significant shift from previous years, it's only a drop in the bucket. During the five year span from 2008 to 2012, investors took out more than $500 billion from stocks and plowed more than $1 trillion in bonds, ICI data shows.

So if 2014 turns out to be the year when the so-called "Great Rotation" of money from bonds to stocks really takes place in earnest, then the market could wind up doing much better than expected. To top of page

    From a technical perspective, FRGI ripped sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $30.89 and back above its 50-day moving average of $34.23 with strong upside volume. This move pushed shares of FRGI into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $33.14. Shares of FRGI are now starting to move within range of triggering another key breakout trade. That trade will hit if FRGI manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $35.73 with high volume.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in FRGI as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $34.23 or above $33 and then once it sustains a move or close above $35.75 with volume that hits near or above 220,525 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then FRGI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its all-time high at $38.84. Any high-volume move above that level will then give FRGI a chance to trend north of $40.
